Review of Project Proposals Submitted to the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF)
In 2015, representatives from 196 countries signed a historic climate change agreement, designating the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and Green Climate Fund (GCF) as financial mechanisms. GCF became operational in 2014-15, completing its first replenishment in 2019 with over $9.7 billion USD pledged. The Global Environment Facility (GEF), founded in 1992, addresses environmental issues through collaboration among 184 countries, utilising various trust funds like the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF). Denmark is actively engaged in these initiatives, aligning with its climate and development strategies.
The aim of the Danish Department for Green Diplomacy and Climate (GDK) is to enhance Denmark’s participation on the boards/councils of GCF, GEF, and LDCF, with a particular focus on meticulously assessing project/funding proposals. This effort seeks to exert strategic influence over project development and approval. The primary goals of this assignment involve facilitating thorough due diligence in the evaluation of funding proposals and contributing to knowledge gained and improved comprehension of the portfolios of these three funds, particularly in alignment with Danish organisational strategies for GEF/LDCF and GCF, as well as pertinent Danish bilateral programs. This initiative encompassed the review of 54 funding proposals, carefully selected by the GDK, encompassing 24 for GCF and 30 for GEF/LDCF, spanning a two-year period from January 2023 to January 2025, leading up to the respective board/council meetings.
