Julian Brett is a senior consultant at Tana Copenhagen with over 30 years of experience working with statebuilding, stabilisation, peace and security, human rights and resilience in Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Asia. He covers all areas of the programme cycle, but is particularly strong in programme design, analysis, and monitoring and evaluation. He has undertaken more than 100 consultancy assignments, frequently as team leader, for a range of leading bilateral development agencies, international organisations, and non-governmental organisations.

 

Julian’s assignments include around 40 programme design and formulations and over 35 reviews, evaluations and assessments. Examples include the formulation of all five phases of Danida’s peace and security support to African regional organisations, formulation of multiple governance and civil society support in Ukraine, formulation of country programmes in Afghanistan, and formulation of programmes supporting refugees and other displaced people and host communities in Syria and its neighbours and likewise in Afghanistan. Examples of evaluations include Swedish support to conflict resolution and to peacebuilding and Danish and EU support to countering violent extremism. Julian has also provided long term advisory support on Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) assignments, notably in relation to Danish stabilisation support to Syria and Iraq.

 

Julian has also undertaken multiple studies and analyses.  These include studies on the political economy of African regional organisations, country risk analyses, and thematic guidance on conflict and conflict management. Julian has researched and published on the application of Theory of Change, notably in relation to programmes countering violent extremism.
